The Power of Communication in Creating Inclusive Change

When I was in third grade, I got the worst news ever. I found out I was switching schools. But that moment—what started with confusion—lead to a journey that would eventually lead to the founding of 321 Coffee and a lifelong commitment to inclusion.

Over the years, I’ve learned that communication is the most powerful tool we have to inspire, unite, and create change. Whether I’m speaking to a room of students, a team of corporate leaders, or a community group, I always come back to this truth: clear, intentional communication can change the world.

Why Communication Matters in Inclusion

Inclusion isn’t just a value—it’s a practice. And practicing inclusion starts with how we communicate. I’ve seen firsthand how the right words, shared with the right intention, can open doors, shift perspectives, and build bridges between people who might otherwise never connect.

But I’ve also seen how unclear or unkind communication can create fear, confusion, and resistance to change. That’s why I live by the mantra:

“Clear is kind. Unclear is unkind.”

Communicating Through Change

Change—whether expected or unexpected—is hard. People fear uncertainty. We’d often rather know something bad is coming than live in the unknown. But change also creates opportunity. The key is helping people see that.

When we closed our Durham store, it was one of the hardest decisions I’ve had to communicate. But by starting with why, putting the news in the context of each individual, and offering resources and support, we were able to navigate that moment with empathy and clarity.

After I shared the news, one of our baristas raised his hand. He walked to work, and I worried about how this would affect him. Instead, he said, “Now I get to learn how to ride the bus.” I was amazed—and so grateful.

From Inspiration to Action

At 321 Coffee, we didn’t start with a business plan—we started with a vision. A vision of a world where people of all abilities are valued and included. That vision inspired others to join us. But inspiration alone isn’t enough. You have to communicate in a way that empowers people to act.

That’s what I aim to do every time I speak:

  • Educate by raising awareness

  • Inspire by painting a shared vision

  • Activate by empowering people to take the next step

  • Navigate by guiding through change with clarity and compassion
